The Boothby Institute to act as Program Director for 2.2 Million Dollar Grant

2.2 million, 200 volunteers, 2,000 students served Four school regions across Maine will benefit from the 2013 School Turnaround AmeriCorps Grant

Students across four school districts and six schools in Maine will receive improved educational opportunities thanks to a dedicated cadre of AmeriCorps members.

Funded by the Corporation for National & Community Service and the Department of Education, the three year, 2.2 million dollar grant focuses on using innovative strategies to help schools put children on the pathway to success.

AmeriCorps members will provide 300 – 1,700 hours of service each, providing educational support for students at Ellsworth High School, Sumner Memorial High School in Sullivan, Spruce Mountain High School in Jay, Carrabec High School in North Anson, East End Community and Riverton Elementary Schools in Portland.

Press conferences were held in four locations across Maine to announce the award. United States Senators Susan Collins and Angus King and United States Representatives Mike Michaud and Chellie Pingree could not be present, but all had high praise for LearningWorks and the grant:

“These critical funds will assist LearningWorks as it places more than 100 AmeriCorps members into classrooms across Maine.” Senator King

“I’ve had the pleasure of meeting directly with the team at LearningWorks, and I know how dedicated they are to their mission. Providing these additional resources in the classroom will make a real difference to so many of our students.” Congressman Michaud

“This program is a great opportunity to give students better access to the resources and mentoring they need.” Congresswoman Pingree
